Several state-owned properties along Waterloo Street were re-used for arts housing facilities, to cater to the needs of Singapore's growing arts industry. The Waterloo Street Arts Belt complements the nearby art institutions, and these campuses in turn enhance the urban life of the area.
The 95-ha Bras Basah.Bugis district is rich in multi-cultural heritage and architectural diversity. There are 12 places of worship, and also several well-known schools from the 1850s which have been preserved, re-adapted and given a new lease of life.

Realizing the vision of the Bras Basah.Bugis district as a learning hub, the institutions create greater opportunities for students and staff to integrate with the business and civic community in the area.
The district is abuzz as night falls with shopping haunts aplenty, and swanky pubs opening their doors to guests looking to ease the night with cocktails and music. You'll be spoilt for choice with the kinds of cuisine you can find here as well, from chicken rice to French cuisine, along the same street.
The district has a history of active street life. Today, Albert and Waterloo Malls with its eclectic and colourful street life have become main thoroughfares in the district.
